hl has many more values than lr. Google documents 35 lr values. Variants such as en-GB or pt-BR share the lr value of their base language, lang_en and lang_pt.

hl, lr and cr: what is the difference?

hl is the interface language

hl sets the language of the Google page: buttons, labels and the wording of features such as related questions. It also nudges ranking toward that language, but it does not stop results in other languages from showing up. Send it on every request, because without it you get whatever language Google picks.

hl: a French interface for a search in France

curl -G "https://api.justserp.com/v1/google/search" \
  -H "X-API-Key: YOUR_API_KEY" \
  --data-urlencode "q=boulangerie" \
  --data-urlencode "gl=fr" \
  --data-urlencode "hl=fr"

lr limits the language of the results

lr=lang_fr keeps only pages Google judges to be written in French. It filters, so pages in other languages drop out. Separate several values with a pipe: lang_it|lang_de.

lr: only French pages

curl -G "https://api.justserp.com/v1/google/search" \
  -H "X-API-Key: YOUR_API_KEY" \
  --data-urlencode "q=machine learning" \
  --data-urlencode "gl=us" \
  --data-urlencode "hl=en" \
  --data-urlencode "lr=lang_fr"

lr: Italian or German pages

curl -G "https://api.justserp.com/v1/google/search" \
  -H "X-API-Key: YOUR_API_KEY" \
  --data-urlencode "q=machine learning" \
  --data-urlencode "gl=us" \
  --data-urlencode "hl=en" \
  --data-urlencode "lr=lang_it|lang_de"

cr limits the country of the results

cr=countryFR keeps only pages Google ties to France. It is about where a page comes from, not what language it uses. The value is country plus an upper-case country code, and you can join several with a pipe, like countryFR|countryDE. Find the codes in the countries and domains table.

cr: only pages from France

curl -G "https://api.justserp.com/v1/google/search" \
  -H "X-API-Key: YOUR_API_KEY" \
  --data-urlencode "q=machine learning" \
  --data-urlencode "gl=us" \
  --data-urlencode "hl=en" \
  --data-urlencode "cr=countryFR"

Which one do I need?

Want the page in a language, use hl. Want results written in a language, use lr. Want results from a country, use cr. To search as a user in a country, that is gl, not cr.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between hl and lr?

hl is the language of the Google interface, and it only nudges which results rank. lr is a filter: with lr=lang_fr, only pages in French can appear. Use both when you want a French interface and French pages.

What does hl=en-GB do?

It asks for the English interface in its British form. Some languages have regional versions, such as en-GB, pt-BR, pt-PT, zh-CN, zh-TW and es-419.

Which lr values does Google accept?

Google documents 35, from lang_ar to lang_zh-TW. They are the ones shown in the lr column of the table. Languages without an lr value cannot be used as a results filter.

What is cr=countryUS?

cr restricts results to pages from one country, or several joined with a pipe. The value is the word country followed by an upper-case country code, such as countryUS or countryDE.

Should I always send hl?

Yes. Without hl, the page comes back in the language of wherever the request is made from, which may not be the one you expect. Send hl on every request so results are repeatable.

Is hl the same as gl?

No. gl is the country, hl is the language. They are independent, so you can search from Switzerland (gl=ch) with a French interface (hl=fr).
